When I was a caterpillar I went through the growing pains of nature,
Maturing, developing, acquiring the nutrients needed to weather
The storms of life with its predators bent of destroying me
But I was protected by life’s larva cocoon.
I took full advantage of life’s opportunities reaching my potential
To developed into a beautiful meaningful butterfly.
I enjoyed all the wonders of life
Freedom, dignity, playfulness
Then came the wing clippers.
My beautiful rain forest became a dangerous jungle
Where survival of the fittest is the lay of the land
Where those with voracious appetites devour the gentle and the slow.
Not only were they mean-spirited, vicious, diabolic and cruel
But also they were greedy, heartless, hypocritical and unforgiving
They hated my new found freedom and carefree lifestyle
Almost as much as they hated the peace loving doves.
I forged a good fight but a delicate, sensitive and clever butterfly
Is just no match for vultures, sharks and snakes.
They clipped my wings and ridiculed me
As I crawl around on the ground
Scrounging for their meager leftovers.
I do count my blessing of simply being alive.
Even in nature, life seem so unfair
When on land, air and sea
Snakes, vultures and sharks
Often get their way
And Mother Nature
In All Her glory
Does not even spank them
Or grow back my wings!
